My commitment

nawidslab.com aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA, so everyone, including people who use assistive technology, can read the histories and maps here. nawidslab is a personal project run by Nawid Samim, and this statement covers every page on nawidslab.com.

The site partially conforms to WCAG 2.1 AA: most content meets the standard, but some parts don't yet (see Known limitations). I review the site as I add new work and fix issues as I find them.

What's in place

  • Keyboard navigation. The main menu and links can be reached with the Tab key, and a skip link lets you jump to the main content.

  • Alt text. Maps and images have text descriptions so screen readers can describe them.

  • Clear structure. Pages use headings in a logical order, which makes them easier to scan and navigate with a screen reader.

  • Readable text. Text can be zoomed up to 200% in your browser without losing content, and I aim for strong contrast between text and background.

  • Descriptive links. Link text says where it goes instead of "click here."

  • Responsive layout. The site adapts to phones, tablets and desktops.

The site is built on Wix, which provides many of these features, including its accessibility checking tools.

Known limitations

A few parts of the site aren't fully accessible yet:

  • Historical maps. Many maps are detailed scanned or recreated images. Alt text gives a summary, but it can't capture every place name or border. If you need a fuller description of a specific map, email me and I'll provide one.

  • Animated maps and GIFs. Some animations can't be paused and don't have text alternatives that describe the changes over time.

  • Video mapping. Video work may not have captions or audio descriptions yet.

  • Non-English place names. Some maps include names in Farsi, Arabic or other scripts that screen readers may not pronounce correctly.

  • Third-party content. Some features and embedded content come from Wix or other providers, and I can't fully control how accessible they are.

I'm working on fuller map descriptions, captions and pause controls for animations.

Feedback and contact

If something on nawidslab.com is hard to use or you need content in another format, email nawid@yipinstitute.org with the subject line "Accessibility." It helps to include:

  • The page address (URL)

  • What you were trying to do and what went wrong

  • The browser and any assistive technology you use

I'll reply within 5 business days and work to fix the issue or get you the content another way.
